DepEd moving to free 3 hostaged teachers

The Department of Education (DepEd) is exerting all efforts to free the three remaining Zamboanga Sibugay teachers who are still being held captive by rebels. The three teachers were abducted last March in the southwestern part of Mindanao.

Last May, three teachers who were earlier kidnapped, also in the same area last January were freed after more than four months in captivity.

The remaining captive teachers were identified as Jocelyn Enriquez, 43; Jocelyn Inion, 39; and Noemi Mandi, 38, all teachers at Bangkaw-Bangkaw Elementary School in Zamboanga, Sibugay.

More schools suspend classes due to A(H1N1)

MANILA, Philippines—Eleven more schools in San Pablo City in Laguna have students who tested positive for Influenza A(H1N1), prompting the city health office to advise them to suspend classes.

Dr. Job D. Brion, city health officer, identified the schools as the Academia De San Pablo De Loyola, Canossa College of San Pablo, Col. Dizon High School, Lake City Christian School, Del Remedio School Annex 4, Central Elementary School, Laguna College, City High School (Main), Science High School, Central Fast Learner School, and Liceo De San Pablo.

5 students in Laguna infected with A(H1N1)-DepEd

MANILA, Philippines -- Five high school students in Laguna province have been infected with the Influenza A(H1N1) virus, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced today. 

According to the DepEd, the five A(H1N1)-infected students were from the San Pablo National High School in San Pablo, Laguna. 

Because of this, DepEd Assistant Secretary Thelma Santos said the soap-making training supposed to be held in the school was cancelled.

The school already has 187 A(H1N1) cases, prompting school administrators to suspend classes until July 20.

Cotabato teachers, DepEd: "spare the children from violence"

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/15 July) –   Teachers from public and private schools coming from different religions in Cotabato City this morning gathered for a march-rally around the city’s main streets and plaza, demanding, among others, “justice for all” and “spare the children from violence.”

Employees from the Department of Education (DepEd) also participated in the march that culminated in a rally at the city plaza, photographs taken by the Cotabato City-based Mindanao Cross show.
